Forgotten Software Synths You Need in 2026

Bored of new plugins every week? Want something new — or rather something old? I felt the same craving for new tools but never found satisfaction in the latest releases. Then I realized: the spark often lies in vintage and forgotten software. So, here’s a collection of electronic music software you can explore in 2026.

  1. 1. Synaptic Probe — Virtual Analog (1999)

"Synaptic Probe is an early softsynth that never got released as a VST, which it predates. It has been awesome back in the day, but the company that made it (Synaptic) has long but disappeared from the face of Earth." — u/alterom (Reddit, 2017)

  2. 2. VAZ Modular — Martin Fay

"Martin Fay's VAZ Modular aims to provide the best of both worlds. Its modular approach leaves you free to design your own synths, but the modules themselves are comparatively high-level, so that a simple design might only use seven or eight modules, and even your most complex creations will only need a couple of dozen." — Sound On Sound (2001)

  3. 3. Orion Platinum — Synapse Audio

Orion Platinum brings the full power of a vintage era all in one DAW/soft-synth workstation to the table. It combines pattern-based sequencing, multi-track audio recording, and built-in generators, effects, and samplers.

  4. 4. ZynAddSubFX (Zyn-Fusion)

Free and open-source software synthesizer for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It features three hybrid synth engines combining additive, subtractive, Fourier, and other synthesis methods. No external samples are used to produce the sound; everything is done by synthesis.

  5. 5. Laurie Spiegel's Music Mouse

This is one of my greatest findings. I made a little album using this device. It's available as a web music tool and was originally designed for Atari. Unfortunately, the original software isn’t available now — I’ve tried to contact Laurie Spiegel but haven’t succeeded yet.

That’s the end of this post — thank you for reading! Don’t forget to comment on the software you know or would like to share.
